Questions before moving to the cloud

A practical starting point for application dependencies, access, data and rollback planning.

A cloud migration starts with understanding how applications and daily operations depend on each other, rather than choosing server capacity alone.

01

Map the current environment

List applications, data sources and their connections. Record who accesses them, from where, and at what times demand is highest. Check licensing conditions. Do not assume every workload must move together.

02

Define a bounded first step

Choose the first workload, acceptance checks and responsible people. In a test environment, exercise data access, authentication and core business workflows. Include a communication plan so users know what will change and when.

03

Agree operations and rollback

Make ownership of backups, alerts and capacity reviews explicit. Write down how to return to the previous environment if acceptance criteria are not met. Consider retiring the old resources only after those checks are complete.

04

Prepare for the first conversation

A short infrastructure overview, key application list, growth expectations and the issues you want to solve are a useful starting point. They help compare on-premises, cloud and hybrid options against the same requirements.
